It wasn’t exactly a foolproof way to gather accurate data.įortunately, Billboard realized the error of its ways and corrected some flaws in its data collection. If a record store manager couldn’t remember what album actually sold the most or they didn’t like what was popular at the time, they then had the opportunity to report to Billboard whatever answer they felt like giving. ![]() ![]() These informal surveys left a lot of room for fudging - and outright fraud. Staff members at Billboard called up record stores, other retailers and radio stations around the country each week and asked managers to fill out reports about (or just confirm verbally) what had been selling or playing the most. Billboard’s Charts Have Always Faced Obstaclesīillboard’s current difficulties in determining what’s really popular aren’t the first time it’s had issues with measuring what everyone’s listening to. Vanity Fair reports that beloved music publication Rolling Stone will launch its own charts - charts that promise to be more representative than Billboard’s, because “they will be updated daily as opposed to weekly, they will go deeper on streaming data, and they will be completely transparent about their measurement methodologies.” All of this to say, the days of the Billboard charts’ authority - and necessity - may be coming to an end. ![]() Not to mention, Billboard, which has been the authority on song popularity since 1940, is about to have some stiff competition. “Billboard’s Women in Music show is a one-of-a-kind event, and there is no better platform to help our community grow and our voices be heard. After all, measuring the Hot 100 becomes much more complicated when fans aren’t just buying music, but streaming it. “On behalf of the founding World of Women team, it is an absolute honor and dream-come-true to participate in such a landmark moment with an incredibly inspirational, diverse, and influential group of women,” Karkai said in a statement. The people who purchase Billboard’s NFTs will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Billboard’s 2023 Women in Music event in Los Angeles, walk the red carpet, and meet Karkai. Christina Aguilera’s cover will benefit National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Madonna will donate proceeds to City of Joy, and Mariah Carey will donate hers to Camp Mariah’s Fresh Air Fund. “We are thrilled to collaborate with World of Women and Yam Karkai for this monumental first for Billboard,” Julian Holguin, President of Billboard, said in a statement. ”The cultural significance of this partnership aligns perfectly with our commitment of championing women who are breaking down barriers and shaping culture within music and beyond,” he added.Ī portion of the proceeds from the NFT magazine cover auction will benefit non-profit organizations chosen by each of the three featured celebrities.
